Raul double cheers Ramos's Real

MADRID (AFP) – Juande Ramos may be wielding a new broom at Real Madrid but it was one of the old guard who starred as the nine-times champions saw off Zenit St Petersburg in their final Champions League Group H game on Wednesday.

Veteran forward and three-time champion Raul bagged a brace to sandwich a goal by Arjen Robben in a 3-0 win over the outclassed Russians and cement the runners-up spot behind Juventus.

Raul's goals made him the competition's all-time top scorer with 66 goals ahead of AC Milan's Filippo Inzaghi and gave a fillip to a side whose confidence has been sagging in recent weeks.

Ramos, taking charge of the Bernabeu bench for the first time since replacing the sacked Bernd Schuster the previous day, made one change from the side which lost 4-3 to his old club Sevilla at the weekend by putting former Liverpool hero Jerzy Dudek in goal in place of Iker Casillas.

The man sacked by Tottenham in October then sat back to allow the rest of the side to show what they are made of.

"It's a good result, which boosts team morale. I really liked the players' attitude," said Ramos.

Sporting director Pedja Mijatovic, the power behind the Bernabeu throne, noted that "now we are a little calmer. We saw something different with the change of coach."

Real had already qualified along with group rivals Juventus - who got the better of them in both their autumn meetings - ahead of Wednesday's game.

But the team had a point to prove after Schuster was shown the door following their weekend loss to Sevilla which left the club fifth in La Liga, nine points adrift of Barcelona.

Schuster's year in charge ended after he caused an outcry by saying Real could not hope to beat Barca at the Nou Camp next weekend.

Ramos's defensive namesake Sergio Ramos meanwhile insisted he did not share Schuster's pessimism.

"Tonight we controlled the ball well and kept a clean sheet - we can win at the Nou Camp," he told Canal Plus Espagne.

Raul notched the opener on 24 minutes, firing past keeper Vyacheslav Malafeev from the edge of the six-yard box following a Rafael van der Vaart cross.

Five minutes after the restart Raul instigated a fine move as he sent Arjen Robben away to make it 2-0.

And in the 58th minute Robben repaid the compliment with the pass from which Raul, long since discarded by the Spanish national side, made it 3-0. Two minutes later, the crowd were on their feet to salute Raul as he gave way to Javier Saviola.

According to persistent media reports Ramos wants to prise away playmaker Andrei Arshavin from Zenit in the January transfer window but on this evidence the man he also wanted at White Hart Lane would not necessarily add to the mix.

However, the Russian could still provide some fresh impetus given Real's current injury crisis.

Arshavin earlier told British daily The Sun: 'I can confirm that officials from Zenit have begun preliminary negotiations with Real Madrid about my transfer."

Rooney saves United blushes

MANCHESTER (AFP) – Wayne Rooney saved Manchester United from an embarrassing Champions League defeat at home to Aalborg on Wednesday, but the striker was lucky to avoid a red card for a first-half foul on Kasper Risgard during this 2-2 draw.

England striker Rooney scored a crucial equaliser on 52 minutes to extend United's unbeaten run in the Champions League to 19 games - a record shared with Ajax and Bayern Munich.

But Sir Alex Ferguson's team were unconvincing and although defeat would have been a setback, the loss of Rooney to suspension could potentially have been much more damaging.

"There were some great chances," Ferguson said. "We should have taken at least 30 percent of them and then we would have won the game comfortably.

"We should have won the game, but the good thing is we won the group which we wanted to do and our unbeaten record remains, which is good."

Topping the group means United will play the second leg of their knockout tie at home and Ferguson feels that could be an advantage.

"(We will) come to Old Trafford with a full house and a really good atmosphere," he said. "We are there, have got the track record and the players so let's go and have a go."

Rooney admitted this Aalborg side was a lot better than the one United had beaten 3-0 in Denmark in October.

"We know we can play a lot better," he said. "Aalborg were definitely a better team than we played in the first game. But with the players we have we should be winning these games.

"In the first half the tempo of our game wasn't good and they caught us on the counter-attack a few too many times. I think in the second half we could have won the game."

With United already assured of their place in the December 19 draw for the Champions League knock-out stages, Ferguson rang the changes against the Danish champions, making nine changes from the team that defeated Sunderland at Old Trafford last Saturday.

Cristiano Ronaldo, sidelined due to the hip injury sustained in that 1-0 victory, made a brief appearance on the pitch before the game, however, when he was presented with the Ballon d'Or by Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton - two of United's three, along with the late George Best, previous European Footballers of the Year.

Even without Ronaldo, United would not have expected to be troubled by an Aalborg team treading water in mid-table in the Danish League, and the European champions appeared to be threatening a rout when they took the lead from their first attack after just three minutes.

A swift one-two between Ryan Giggs and Rooney led to Giggs releasing Tevez inside the Aalborg penalty area and the Argentina striker ruthlessly took his chance by guiding a first-time left foot shot past goalkeeper Karim Zaza.

Rooney and Tevez proved a lethal double act at times last season, but their partnership has been broken up by the arrival of Bulgarian hitman Dimitar Berbatov.

The pair showed signs of their old understanding, however, as they tore apart the Aalborg defence in the early stages and Tevez should have scored a second when he shot wide from fifteen yards after being picked out by Rooney.

Tevez then sent a glancing header from Rooney's cross wide of the far post on 23 minutes as United maintained the pressure, but Aalborg were able to withstand the pressure and they stunned United by equalising on 31 minutes.

Anders Due's in-swinging free-kick from the right flank was met with a backwards header from Michael Jakobsen and his contact was enough to take the ball past goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

Four minutes before half-time, Rooney then had his lucky escape when French referee Laurent Duhamel failed to spot his foul when he placed his studs in Risgard's chest.

Aalborg were angry at the referee's failure to spot the incident, but they made United pay in perfect fashion by grabbing a shock lead when Jeppe Curth headed in Due's cross two minutes into injury time.

United responded well in the second-half, though, and Rooney hauled them level when he rifled in from 20 yards after being released by Brazilian midfielder Anderson.

But although the home side poured forward in search of a winner, Aalborg held out and the visitors claimed a deserved draw.

Chelsea, Roma and Panathinaikos reach last 16

Didier Drogba became Chelsea's top scorer in the Champions League with his 19th goal in the competition that sealed a 2-1 win over CFR Cluj on Tuesday and sent last season's beaten finalists through to the last 16.

Ivory Coast striker Drogba, who has had a torrid season marred by injuries and suspension, sent Chelsea into the knockout phase for the sixth successive season with a 71st-minute winner.

Drogba produced a clinical finish after Yssouf Kone had cancelled out Salomon Kalou's opener.

"It's important for me to have (Drogba) as he is one of the best in the world and with him I have more options but I have to say that (Nicolas) Anelka is also important," Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari said.

"He had no pre-season, got injured, came back, injured again, suspended, what cam I do? Now I pray for no more injuries and maybe I can put two strikers together."

The result also completed a clean sweep for English teams in the group stage as Chelsea, who finished runners-up in Group A, joined holders Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool in the knockout stage which starts in February.

AS Roma joined Chelsea in the last 16 as the Group A winners after classy second-half goals from Matteo Brighi and Francesco Totti secured a 2-0 home win over Girondins Bordeaux.

Brighi scored from close range after a good run and cross by Simone Perrotta and Totti drilled in the second with the outside of his foot from a superb through ball from Jeremy Menez.

OPPORTUNIST GOAL

Greek side Panathinaikos secured the final available berth in the knockout stage after Giorgos Karagounis scored to give them a 1-0 win over Cypriot rivals Anorthosis Famagusta in a tense affair.

Karagounis picked up a loose ball after a defensive blunder on the edge of the penalty box and his shot somehow trickled under keeper Zoltan Nagy and over the line.

The result also lifted Panathinaikos to the top of Group B above former winners Inter Milan, who face potentially difficult opposition in the last 16 after a 2-1 defeat at Werder Bremen.

"Now we deserve one of the strongest teams," Inter coach Jose Mourinho told Sky. "Manchester United, the champions, or Barcelona, currently the best in Europe, to really judge our potential in the Champions League."

It was a vital win for Bremen, who leapfrogged Anorthosis to book a consolation berth in the UEFA Cup last 32 available to the eight third-placed teams.

Five-times winners Liverpool won Group D after coming from behind to beat PSV Eindhoven 3-1 and finish ahead of Atletico Madrid, who were held to a 0-0 draw at Olympique Marseille.

Ryan Babbel, Albert Riera and David N'Gog struck for Liverpool after Danko Lazovic had given the home side brief hope of reaching the UEFA Cup knockout stage.

"I am really pleased finishing top of the group but also to see how a lot of young players performed on this stage," said Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez.

Barcelona, who had already won Group C, were beaten 3-2 at home by Shakhtar Donetsk after fielding an understrength side while also qualified Sporting Lisbon enjoyed a 1-0 success at Swiss side Basel.

Inzaghi breaks Portsmouth's hearts in UEFA Cup football

PORTSMOUTH (AFP) – AC Milan's veteran striker Pippo Inzaghi netted a last-minute equaliser to deny Tony Adams a first home win as Portsmouth manager in a 2-2 draw in the UEFA Cup.

Inzaghi, who had earlier hit the woodwork three times, pounced on a loose ball with less than a minute on the clock to earn a point and ensure Milan's safe passage into the knockout stages of the tournament.

It was Inzaghi's 65th career goal in European competition.

Portsmouth had a two-goal margin until the final eight minutes after Younes Kaboul and Kanu netted which woke Milan from a slumber as Ronaldinho's fabulous free-kick provided a platform for poacher Inzaghi to break English hearts.

"I'm delighted with my team's performance. I thought they were excellent tonight and it was a really really positive performance," said Adams.

"We are struggling to put teams to bed but they have some excellent players and if you switch off, they punish you."

Adams's squad was stretched to breaking point as the Portsmouth manager was missing five first team players, so much so he did not have enough substitutes to fill his bench.

Adams said his players were at a low ebb but insisted the team had recorded their finest performance since he took over from Harry Redknapp last month.

Adams said: "They are just a little deflated and disappointed because they feel they should have and could have won the game."

"I'm not feeling that disappointed because of the performance but the guys are a bit flat as they wanted some reward for their hard work.

"I'm really proud of the guys and the way we played. That was the best performance I have had since I've been manager.

"Our qualification maybe depends on other results now. Wolfsburg will be a tough game and if we can pick up points there and beat Heerenveen who knows?"

Kanu, once of Inter Milan, was handed a first start of the season following Jermain Defoe's withdrawal with a back problem.

Adams would have cast an envious eye towards Carlo Ancelotti as Milan's coach was afforded the luxury of making nine changes from the weekend game against Torino with Alexandre Pato, Clarence Seedorf, Andrea Pirlo and Ronaldinho all named as substitutes.

"We had almost lost hope but the reaction was really good and to come back from 2-0 down like that was great," said Ancelotti.

"Ronaldinho definitely made a difference because he reopened the game with an excellent free-kick. The game really changed pace with that."

Portsmouth's tactics of quick passing couple with some dynamic wing-play from Glen Johnson and Armand Traore was evident early on as the Frenchman burst down the left before his cross found its way to Papa Bouba Diop who shot well wide.

Milan appeared content to rely on the counter-attack and they won a dangerous looking free-kick on 11 minutes when Diop crudely brought down Mathieu Flamini.

Andriy Shevchenko's effort rebounded off the wall before squirming its way into Inzaghi whose left-footed shot on the turn beat David James but clipped the post.

Portsmouth though grew in stature and confidence as the old legs of Kanu began to exert influence on the game.

Milan were shocked into retaliation as Gennaro Gatusso's through-ball clipped off the feet of Kaboul, lifting it over Sylvain Distin and into Inzaghi in space.

The former Italian international did everything right lobbing the on-rushing James but the ball clipped agonisingly off the top of the crossbar.

Just after the hour Portsmouth had the lead as a Johnson free-kick from deep was not cleared allowing Kanu to return a pass to the England international. The full-back's cross found the towering figure of Kaboul to power a header past Dida.

Seedorf was introduced as Ancelotti desperately strived to restore some stability to his midfield which continued to crumble. As the Milan coach prepared to introduce Ronaldinho and Pato they were two down.

Johnson sent a perfect low cross into Kanu who wrapped his gangling legs around the ball to score his first goal since May's FA Cup Final win at Wembley.

A Seedorf cross led to Inzaghi striking the woodwork once more, this time with a diving header but a hush soon descended across a fervent Fratton Park as Ronaldinho picked his spot in James' top corner from 30 yards on 84 minutes.

As nerves were shredded Portsmouth retreated further back and their passing rhythm and control withered away in the face of Ronaldinho and Seedorf's ability.

With less than a minute to go the pressure finally told as a long-ball hoisted into the area found its way to Inzaghi who netted from close-range.
